Re: Straight From Horse's Mouth
We're homeside, near the 50, upper level. Yeah, there are clusters of fans that show up late, wearing the latest fashions - as long as it's not red and blue - and are there just to be seen. Also the grayhaired oldsters who come to games out of habit more than anything. But there's also a few near us who are actually into the games and cheer and pay attention.
Just like with the families leaving night games early issue, you're not going to change the culture of the SMU fan until you change the team. People have grown accustomed to the games being secondary because, for the most part, they have been. We play unfamiliar opponents in a weird league and then we lose most of the time. At least that's been the m.o. for years. That perception doesn't change over night.
And as for the Peruna controversy: Bag ice has nailed it. This was a June Jones thing from the start. He's a weird guy and is bugged by the weirdest things, like wearing socks. For some reason, having a pony as a mascot must irritate him to no end. He used his connections to make the Mustang gift happen, hoping to force a change by making SMU's mouths water with potential gifts from Boone. But Pickens' money is still headed to Stillwater and those geldings are headed to a nice retirement at SMU's expense.

I tend to think that if no one had reacted, these horses would be our mascots. I believe and it is a belief that had no one said anything, Peruna would have been politely retired and Glue and Stick would be our mascots.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Straight From Horse's Mouth
Since SMU doesn't value its own traditions, its nice when we fans can show them what we think is important.
It's also nice to know, if the stories on here about Pres. Turner are true, he has a sense of our traditions, even if no one else in the administration or athletic department seems to have a clue.
Now let's just win some dadgum football games.

Re: Straight From Horse's Mouth
SMU has two traditions for over 75 years -
1. Peruna
2. Mustang Band
The nose of the camel (or should I say geldings) is under the tent, soon the whole JJ and Steve-O camel will be in the tent.
Next will be the band....just wait...............

Re: Straight From Horse's Mouth
JJ and StevieO wanted the full size horses and essentially went around the University administration. They were the ones "requesting" them. If they thought they could do it in an orderly fashion, then they would have included the administration on day 1.
Mushroom theory of management; "Keep them in the dark, feed them manure, and hope they grow.
Watch the Homecoming parade. Someone special is supposed to be wearing "Peruna is my Mascot" label.
