2012 QB prospect Don King III

Postby Garret » Mon Jun 28, 2010 2:37 pm

Note: All of what I'm quoting is publicly available from scout and what Google News was able to save.

Don King III is a player that will certainly be on the SMU recruiting radar this year. The Class of 2012 quarterback/safety from Waxahachie has tremendous size for his age at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, and he has excellent bloodlines as well. King's father, Don King Jr., is a former All-SWC quarterback at SMU.

Cool! He won a lot of games at SMU including a SWC Co-Championship when many thought we'd fall apart after DickerJamesllhenny graduated. Some of the most memorable 21 point comeback including at least 2 TDs in waning 4 or so minutes against Baylor in Waco in a driving rainstorn, drummed Texas and beat Notre Dame in Aloha Bowl.

Getting him would be poetic justice. I was in Tuscon for the loss to Arizona when the U OF A fans showered our team with monopoly money when they came out of the tunnel. Don was the quarterback as I recall. Bitter loss. We could do nothing right. What a tough 25 years this has been.

Mama Bouche, I also was at that U of A game in Tucson. What a sickening feeling when the U of A fans showed their $ssm made worse by our humiliating loss. We came out on the first drive and ran it right down their throats. Unfortunately, there were 50 minutes of football left.

Yeah ouch, the only thing that cures that is my dvd of the 1980 and 82 games with Texas and the recent Hawaii Bowl win. Now I just have to come to Dallas to see my first game in Ford Stadium. Somebody pick me a winner that I come to and go home happy.

That actually sounds like a hilarious way to mock an opponent everybody knows is cheating. It's clean, clever, funny, and original. Swap SMU with USC and I bet the vast majority of people around here would get an absolute kick of it.

Uh, no. Remember these players are kids. If you wanted to pick on Bill Clement or others in control, fine. I sat behind the SMU bench at a Nevada game and you should have heard the insults. Not manly men hurling them in my book, but they got theirs. What a Christmas present with the Hawaii Bowl. I have had the pleasure of taking USC fans down a notch at games in front of their families. That's different. Cheap shots at the players on the field don't cut it with me, unless you want to suit up, get on the field and get after it.

Monopoly money = funny. It is completely on point, original, humorous, and in no way uses derogatory or foul language. It is clean. Additional points are awarded for using a prop not typically found in any college stadium. Any insults or chants hurled by Arizona students and fans can be treated differently. I really don't know what the Nevada SMU game has to do with this as the topic of discussion was a non conference game in October of 1985 against the University of Arizona.

Also, as collegiate students, they are adults...grown men. They are 18 to 22, 23 years old, old enough to vote, old enough to buy tobacco, old enough to serve our country in the military...yet mysteriously not old enough to purchase or consume any kind of alcohol. To be fair when you're 18 in a lot of ways you still are a kid, but come on, this isn't pop warner football here.

Fun like this never hurt anybody. If anyone on the team was really, really incensed and just so upset with what happened, than there are larger issues at play. I would hope we're recruiting players who have the fortitude to stand up to such a rude, dastardly display of fandom by the opposing school.

I completely agree with your view that the players should be able to take it.
There's always going to be some talk and a lot of it is on the field. I'm just saying folks taunting a team or player don't look strong, they look weak. I am all for insults and humor. I had the Bevo fans here get their knickers in a twist during the National Championship game earlier this year. I'd rather let loose at some blow hard fan who's in need of a tune up rather than a player who has made a lot of sacrifices to compete.

The best student display I've seen was the 1988 Texas/A&M game days after the infamous Jackie Sherrill/Federal Express/George Smith episode exploded into the national media which was investigated by (surprise the DMN/Belo). Smith in recorded interviews with the DMN stated "It was not uncommon for me to seek help from Coach Sherrill and Coach (George) Pugh. I called them often and sought advice and help with jobs and my getting started in a career," Smith said.
"It was nor a surprise to receive some help I had asked for. It certainly was not hush money," Smith said. See link

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/2413 ... LENCE.html

Went to the game with an Aggie girlfriend at the time. Texas fans were waving about 40,000 Federal Express envelopes and hundreds of signs to the effect "Jackie!!! Please Send Cash" in front of the national TV audience. Again(hint Thad-no story about Texas recruiting in the 1970-80s would be complete without chronicling the investigative media war between the Dallas newspapers of the time). They investigated not only SMU but also got A&M, Ou, OSU, TCU, UH, Tech, Texas and Baylor on probation too.

I've always thought the humiliation of the university on national TV led directly to the forced resignation of Jackie Sherrill days later. So the Texas students played a role in getting that scumbag dismissed and Federal Express got a lot of free advertisement

Moma, come see the Washington State game this year at Ford Stadium and you will go home happy.
