The best student display I've seen was the 1988 Texas/A&M game days after the infamous Jackie Sherrill/Federal Express/George Smith episode exploded into the national media which was investigated by (surprise the DMN/Belo). Smith in recorded interviews with the DMN stated "It was not uncommon for me to seek help from Coach Sherrill and Coach (George) Pugh. I called them often and sought advice and help with jobs and my getting started in a career," Smith said.
"It was nor a surprise to receive some help I had asked for. It certainly was not hush money," Smith said. See link

Went to the game with an Aggie girlfriend at the time. Texas fans were waving about 40,000 Federal Express envelopes and hundreds of signs to the effect "Jackie!!! Please Send Cash" in front of the national TV audience. Again(hint Thad-no story about Texas recruiting in the 1970-80s would be complete without chronicling the investigative media war between the Dallas newspapers of the time). They investigated not only SMU but also got A&M, Ou, OSU, TCU, UH, Tech, Texas and Baylor on probation too.
I've always thought the humiliation of the university on national TV led directly to the forced resignation of Jackie Sherrill days later. So the Texas students played a role in getting that scumbag dismissed and Federal Express got a lot of free advertisement

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
