I'd argue that a lot of parents would care how long the average student takes to get their degree. If I'm footing the bill, and one school graduates 89% of their students in the four year time slot, I'm probably going to give that some weight in the decision process. That's neither here no there, and yeah, there are cases where it really does take longer than four years for good reason. At SMU though...there are plenty of not so great reasons why it takes kids more than four years. Employers, yeah you're right, once you get it, it doesn't matter nearly as much.leopold wrote:Hell, it took me eight, mostly due to financial reasons (I admit, I could have been a little more focused in the classroom). But nobody gives a damn as long as you GET the degree.Stlhockeyguy02 wrote:I know that our four year graduation rates are absolutely dreadful compared to our "bench mark" schools like Vandy, Duke, etc. They have four year rates around 90%...and I think ours was around either 56%, or 64%. The Daily Campus did an article on it last year. SMU is definitely the place to take your time to graduate! Of course I can't imagine admin is too too worried about that, I mean, for over 20k a semester, who wouldn't support a six year academic plan?

You don't like it? Then ask the guy who created the thread to change the name of it. Some of us actually like having a reasonably intelligent discussion about a somewhat significant event that happened recently. A discussion that doesn't degenerate within 20 minutes to either fire the president of the University, or anoint June Jones Emperor. You don't like it? Then don't read it. So, no, thanks for the advice but I won't shut the ^%*# up. I'll continue talking about something I find interesting and with room for reasonable debate and discussion until other people stop answering.Blvd_Stang wrote:I am tired of seeing this thread at the top of the recruiting page.

It's a ridiculous argument. We've gotten more NCAA qualifiers/SMU non-qualifiers admitted in the last 2 years than the previous 23 years combined. And it hasn't killed recruiting - unless getting a 4-star verbal is proof.

By the time the starts are all in and counted, this will easily be our best class post-DP. I'd be willing to bet we end up with more 3 stars than 2, and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't end up seeing 1-2 of our other recruits getting bumped up to 4-star (maybe Nlemchi, Preston and Wall depending on how their seasons go).

Re: Admissions just KILLED recruiting....
UCLA gave Jackson the same deal offered by SMU. Go to JC for one semester and pass with a C average the 2 classes missing from his HS resume and be admitted for the 2d semester. Jackson accepted and signed with UCLA and will enter as a greyshirt. No reason Jackson could not have done the same thing with SMU and chose not to and to be closer to home. No one killed recruiting let alone SMU. If a kid is not qualified he should not be in school whether or not he can play football or the flute.

Thanks for re-hashing...
1) there is more to this then just Jackson...there are other problems with admin/faculty and athletic department...this is just an example of it...
2)I am sure he would have loved to do this at SMU if we would have told him that in advance of him picking up and moving to texas on the assumption he was already in at SMU...something that Turner stated at JJ hiring...NCAA qualifier means you can play here or anywhere for that matter...
3)If you don't think Admin/faculty has held us back since DP and are not totally commited to athletics, you haven't talked with enough people...if we get left out of all this re-alignment you can blame them for starting 20 years to late...
4)When JJ signs the extension, I will drop the issue...
