Super Bowl Press (or lack thereof)

Postby SMU2007 » Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:11 pm

Was just listening to Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio. Talked for a while about how great Fort Worth was, how great it was to have the TCU band welcome the mike and mike show, and how great he thought TCU was. Said "I'll never say another bad thing about TCU again."

I haven't been listening to many other outlets but I hope SMU is getting some good pub on a national scale since we are the only other major school in the area. I haven't heard much at all.

F Laura Miller on this one...

espn got screwed and had to set up over in cowtown - thats why they are focused there. The rest of the world is in Dallas - i cant stand laura Miller but she might have been right on the stadium - Dallas is getting most of the benefit without having to pay for it. Our hotels are packed - there are still empty rooms in Arlington

ESPN is the only media entity in Ft. Worth. Every other outlet is based out of Dallas. Radio row and the media center are at the Sheraton (old Adam's Mark) in downtown Dallas.

ESPN picked Fort Worth over dallas and therefore had a CHOICE in locations. Rooms in Fort Worth are full and there are more steelers fans than packer fans in the area with most staying on the western side of the metroplex.

Its all good for the whole area, but don't act like you guys normally do and pretend the world revolves around the dallas' city limits only.

SMU got a slightly backhand dis from NFL network. They were discussing how the Packers had changed their practice location from SMU to a high school because Highland Park has the IPF and SMU doesn't, while the Steelers didn't need to worry because TCU has an IPF.

I was also told that there were talks between HP & SMU to share the costs and benefits of both an IPF and a new natatorium. Not sure who or what was the dealbreaker, but I trust the source of info.

ESPN will definitely be regretting that decision when the temps drop below freezing, good luck getting anyone out there.

ESPN did not choose to be in siberia (ie cowtown), they got stuck there since there had to be someone stuck over there. Believe me - i have heard from some of them - they are not happy.

The epicenter of media/parties/and everything worth doing surrounding the super bowl is in Dallas. What was funny was each team that won in their winning speachs talked about coming to DALLAS for the superbowl. Pretty funny.

I came to the same conclusion when ESPN announced the location. FW put up similar money to Dallas to help host this and they wanted something that would give them exposure. Everything is happening in Dallas and ESPN took one for the team (to get enhanced access no doubt as the NFL is prone to giving exclusive perks to their own network). There's no doubt that this is the "Dallas" SB and Dallas will reap the most benefit in terms of money and reputation.

The one city getting royally screwed is Arlington. They'll get a few mentions during the game, publicity worth probably $10-12 million. They could have taken the $300 million they spent on the stadium and bought the prime time slots on all four networks for a month straight and had money left over to buy ads in the next 20 super bowls.
