Turned the corner...I feel a gangster fight coming on...
Re: Turned the corner...STALLION FUN FACT
According to Sagarin-SMU had the worst Strength of Schedule in CUSA by a fantastic and incredible 66 teams. And guess what 3 of our wins don't even count in that analysis because Sagarin doesn't even recognize victories over NAIA, NCAA Division 3 and National Christian Conference AA teams. Hopefully the CUSA Commissioner has a nice little sit down with Dohbo and our AD about that embarrassment like he reportedly did with other schools last year. Let's sit and ponder that just for a moment. SMU's SOS was 66 places worse than the 11th worst CUSA schedule. Wow! SMU Football's Strength of Schedule was 3rd in CUSA one place behind second. "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Turned the corner...I would imagine SMU football will have the #1 SOS next year for football...
Wish we could change it to play more little sisters of the poor... I like the basketball team and want them to be great, but we need equal rights on this board...
Re: Turned the corner...Stallion,
Good stat, have to give props on that. Agreed that we must improve our scheduling now. Not just for us but for the conference as well. Still, the back half of our schedule this season showed that the team had taken major strides. Peace, ![]() Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: Turned the corner...
I'm not overvaluing the accomplishments of the hoops program, cause we haven't done anything yet. It's just a rapidly improving program, no different than football. Spare me the it take longer in football garbage, cause one was perceived as a bad program, the other racist. Then look at the demographics of the recruitable athletes for each sport, and you'll see that in this case, hoops was going to take longer.
Re: Turned the corner...The racist thing has been kicked around at SMU forever...It existed when I was there 98-02....I undertand exactly what we did to tubss and how that hurt our rep...
my response to that is why then did we let a black asst. hang for major violations and then replace him with 2 white assts? Not to mention we have left a losing white coach stay 5 years and get extensions after we ran a black guy off after 2 seasons... Wouldn't this exaggerate the racial bias argument? Just curious how we combated that this season but couldn't do that the previous 5 years... The football program wasn't perceived as bad, it was dead, which is far worse than the bball situation... Take off the glasses my friend....
Re: Turned the corner...
OMG, Is stallion saying our schedule stunk? Tell us something we haven't been discussing since last May. Better yet, watch a game and see the difference on the court in system & execution. Since you're a stat tool, maybe you'd do the research on where SMU ranks nationally in things like FG Percentage, FG percentage defense, FT shooting, dimes per bucket etc. Those are about as interesting as Stallion fun facts that have been rehashed for a year.
Re: Turned the corner...
LOL @ the football program being perceived as dead. Tell that to the football folks at my company, which is maybe the premier football based apparel company in the world. Heck, let's ask Mike Leach, whom is on our payroll, what he thinks. I have. What about Gene Chizhik, cause I've asked him too. You are guessing, I stand on the few football industry contacts I have. SMU wasn't committed, the second they were, was the second they could achieve on the field. As for guessing, could you know less about the Geary situation? It's funny how hoops haters want to twist that whole thing up, considering the release itself said infractions happened prior to Geary joining the staff. It caught me for a second as well, but the truth is out there, it's just not for public forum consumption.
Re: Turned the corner...First, I am not a hoops hater....
Answer to point 1....isn't not being committed the same as dead...and didn't it take JJ to wake us up from that...Basketball can always survive at schools that don't want to commit to football...I didn't need validation to know that SMU in the middle of the largest pool of talent of high school football players could be revived, but the school didn't want to revive it... I'm not in the football game, but I am smarter than Chizek and leach combined...they aren't telling you anything I couldn't have told you 20 years ago... Point 2 ...If it wasn't Geary then it was DOH, either way someone got us in trouble and if it was DOH, then like Tubbs he should have been fired...If we don't lay the blame elsewhere then the black community should expect us to fire DOH for major violations when we justified firing tubbs for minor...I know I will never hear the truth but I find it odd that Doh takes no heat for the violations. Quick Question, was the compliance guy we fired only in charge of basketball compliance? I ask b/c there is no way Reinbold wouldn't be text messaging every recruit's parents if he thought that was ok...and the football team would be in the same position as the basketball team. You can't claim race was a problem in basketball when all we have done the past 3 years is extend stereotypes...
Re: Turned the corner...I don't mean to change the subject but Nick maybe you know more than we do...yesterday afternoon we were discussing Notre Dame's meteoric rise this year. Yes Hansbrough's a stud like his brother...but how did they do it and DePaul cant/wont/doesnt? Why has DePaul sucked since Quentin Richardson finished playing there? Really since dad Meyer was done I guess. I'd think they could easily be the G'town of Chicago.
Re: Turned the corner...I really don't know very much about either program.
Depaul has no on campus gym...they also had no connection with the top kids in the area...It really isn't much different than SMU. Except they play in the hardest conference in the country... Purcell still has made no in-roads and it will be a tough turn-around... As for ND, they recruit a different kind of kid, they have national appeal, similar to a Vandy, Boston college, ect. This goes a long with the point that you can recruit certain kinds of kids and quickly turn around a program, ND has a great system, campus, atmosphere. These are programs we should try to be like, and we have started, it only took us 5 years to get there...
Re: Turned the corner...
Amen. I am not sure we have turned any corners particularly when most of the schedule is against teams below the top 150. Turning the corner to me suggests that we are competitive with teams in the top 100 and that we cannot claim.
Re: Turned the corner...You can only play the teams on your schedule...
Oral Roberts is 144 and we beat them. Sure it will be nice to be in the top 100 and beat top 100 teams, but it is definitely a lot better now than when we were bogged down in the mid-200s... Shake It Off Moody
Re: Turned the corner...
if "everyone" goes to a bowl game then "everyone" goes to a post season basketball tournament... how many tournaments does it take for SMU basketball to get into the post season?!!! and your argument that SMU bb is better suited then FB is funny, because everyone knows one player can turn around a basketball program. I didnt see that one player this year. your "opinion" on guys who sat out this year is purely your opinion. we have proven players on the football team... you know what im just going to stop there because all you have given is opinion and there have been numerous posts to prove you wrong (based in fact) WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
Re: Turned the corner...The basketball team had a positive season, a step in the right direction...Not going to knock their year.
My frustration only exists in the time it took to get it going, the major violation incurred, and the fact that we are so quick to throw money at certain things...
