No, I would be happier if he were gone. We all know that SMU is not a final destination for coaches but the way he handled the recruiting fiasco, interviewing etc was not acceptable. He sure didn't act that way to Hawaii when he left.
IMO he has lost the trust and confidence of the players (most important), the fans and the university. He displayed no integrity in his actions and no respect for our university. How effective can he be after his actions? He is a lame duck coach and he knows it. It will be interesting how we play in our bowl game. I would prefer that we hire a new coach and demote him to an assistant, then next year give him his walking papers.

No way! It would have been better if he was gone. It is obvious he is not happy here at SMU and he is now a lame duck. I suspect that Orsini is going to have difficulty keeping the big donors onboard. All the schools recruiting against us are going to use this against us. JJ and his staff will not be here much longer. The sooner he is gone and we can get a coach that can take us to the nest level, the better.

I don't hold it against someone who wants to get a "better" job or who wants to live in Phoenix rather than Dallas but it was handled poorly and SMU has been damaged severely. The relationship with JJ is fractured irreparably.

Well said.

I would only add that what pisses me off as well is the religious slant he brought to this. That there was some sort of spiritual calling for him to be here. What a crock of BS.

My experience tells me when an employee wants out, he is no good for your Company, and you best plan an exit strategy for them pronto....and on YOUR terms, not theirs.

No.....if he doesn't like it here, then he should leave. It's what people in the workforce do every day. He thinks after his "magical" season in Hawaii against a cupcake schedule, that he is one of the greatest coaches in the game - which he is not. He doesn't give a rats [deleted] about anything associated with SMU and brings zero energy to the program and the teams play has started to reflect that.

I like Jones, but he should find a way to go. The biggest advantage if he stays is with continuity we'll have a chance to be a mid-to-low Big East football team next year rather than the certain cellar dweller we would have been starting over with a new coach and no recruits.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Mountain Mustang wrote:Definitely conflicted on this one. On the one hand, I'm happy the man who's brought us so far in such a short time is still here but on the other hand I'd be foolish not to worry about what this does to us.

Remember several years ago when Billy Donovan at UF left briefly for the Magic, had a change of heart and came back days later to continue coaching basketball at UF? Before he did that he had back to back national titles. He hasn't done anything since. And in his case it was his decision to come back, which he could at least sell to the team as "hey I had a look and decided I want to be here more."

June Jones doesn't even have this to fall back on. He was gone. He had no desire to come back here, and the only reason he's here is because ASU decided they didn't want him. So we're his safety net? You'd have to be pretty cold blooded to try to sell a kid on your commitment to the school in the wake of this scenario. The recruit would have to be pretty naive to buy it.

I like June Jones. Had a chance to meet him back when he was at Hawaii and he sure seemed like a good guy. I love what he's done for the program up to this point (or I should say up to a month ago). He's going to have to work extremely hard to win back some of the die hard fans that believed he was our man. He's going to have to work even harder to win back support from the team, and he's also going to have to bust his butt to keep this recruiting class in tact. If he's our guy, I wish him the best of luck, because he's going to need it.

Spot on... However the Fans and Alumni are going to have to put in the same effort to get the Trust of the players and coaches back as well... Remember the team saying how much they prefer playing on the road?? That is a real game losing problem...

This Can be all good if everyone learns from the bad and takes hold of the good and moves forward with a team player attitude... Too many people have an unhealthy penchant to hold on to the MISERY and savor it for the sick pleasure they derive... I truly believe some would rather have the Misery than a healthy program.

Yes / No question - Do you think our uninspired play over the past several weeks was due in part to JJ's pouting?

If so, 2012 could be a long season.

I am glad June Jones is still the coach. But I am going to support whoever the coach is. My donation to the program has no influence in the scheme of who is hired or fired. I have been through many SMU football ups and downs - and there will be more... BUT I enjoy going to the games and supporting our team. I always hope that our decision makers have as much sense as they do money. I like June Jones and his staff. We need an intense, major marketing program. See you in Birmingham. PONY UP!
