College bowl games...follow the money

Post by PK »

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Wasn't the Insight Bowl where Minnasota imploded in the second half and lost to Tech a few years ago? It also cost Glen Mason his job, I think.

Uh Huhhh. Maybe Minnesota needs to play a little better football and go to the ROSE BOWL, which they ALSO got paid for despite the fact that they serve as "Target Practice" for the Wolverines and Buckeyes. These small games are university fleecing endeavors hey? YES but if these schools getting "fleeced" weren't obliged to play bowl games where they were gonna get screwed, their home attendance would suffer because every single good player would go to a school willing to play in a "meaningless bowl game" Then Home attendance at Minnesota would be half of what they get a Plano East. Even with the 85 scholarship rule. [deleted] about them all you want the kids WANT to play in Bowl games. Me, I want playoffs. But I'll live in my AQ world where Michigan gets to go to the Sugar Bowl without winning even our division and failing in what is our goal EVERY season at Michigan, winning the Big Ten and going to the Rose Bowl.

IMO for the team I support, the Sugar Bowl is a meaningless bowl game because it isn't in Pasadena.

Via the [deleted] factor... they had one more loss because they played one more game That and the fact that you can see block M Michigan Stickers on cars from coast to coast. Don't think I don't know it's screwed up. BUT the Spartans SHOULD have beaten Notre Dame (Michigan did) and they would have gotten their BCS game. There need be no excuses for them because I would have rather played for the Rose Bowl than backed into the Sugar and our players have said the same. They beat us and we destroyed the Nebraska team that handed them their only conference loss.

F#$* Sparty. Kansas State had a MUCH better BCS case than did they (or Virginia Tech) The game should probably be Boise vs K State but who in the hell would watch that???? ME and other dudes that just watch way too much football and nobody else.

It's not just the small bowls that fleece the schools - MnB correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Michigan lost money on the Orange Bowl they went to years ago where the beat Alabama on a missed XP. If I'm not correct it actually cost the AD his job because the school consistently lost money on the bowl games the Wolverines went to, regardless of the bowl or it's location. I also believe that it was the SECOND AD to lose his job at UM over this (or at least I read that somewere).

I'm for the bowls but I absolutley agree that they need to sort the mess out. Why does TCU and LT have to go all the way to San Diego to play when the schools are practically next door? It's stupid, wastefull, and unorganized. It's also a waste for the bowl that should be there to try to not only provide a stage for the two schools, but also a chance for the city to earn revenue.

'94, I am wondering, I saw your figures for the school revenue for the bowls, and I have to ask - do you know how it is that LSU brings 22M from their game while 'Bama brings 6M and they are playing in the same game? That seems weird to me. Hell, travel expenses from Tuscaloosa are going to be similiar to coming from Baton Rouge.

read the other day that Clemson expects to lose $294k on their Orange Bowl appearance. I blame it on conference revenue sharing. Teams that earn those BCS bids should get to keep 50% before conference revenue sharing
