Louisville fan here. I have no idea where Louisville will be in 5 years, nor am I really concerned in either direction. But I think it is worth discussing some specifics here. For one thing Jurich (UofL's AD) has stated on multiple occasions that the Big East has been a very good conference for UofL and should we ever move we would do so in a respectful manner. I take that to mean we would honor the 27 months agreement. As far as the money is concerned, this is not an issue for Louisville. Last season our athletic department revenue was over $87 million.
I will be big time disappointed in the Big East if they do not hold strong. Once you let one out early you open up the flood gates. It would be way easier to poach the Big East in the future and that is something we don't want.
I'd love to see the Big East file suit against the Big 12. Seems like they have a case given that WVU would probably be honoring their commitment had it not been for the Big 12 telling them to get in by 2012 as Big 12's TV contracts are voided if they don't have at least 10 teams (with 9 teams there is a smaller inventory of games for TV to choose from).

If WVU is out of the Big East next year, then the Big East will only have 7 fb schools, right? Can't be a conference with 7 I thought. That's when all of the newcomers would have to step up right away. Could become a logistical nightmare

I think technically you can't be at 7 and BCS but I also think you have a season or two to correct the issue. I don't think it's an automatic revoke of status.

I thought that was an NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier issue. I don't think there's been a scenario before where a BCS conference has less than 8 teams. I might be wrong though.

That's basically what I thought also. It seems like I've heard that but no idea if it's true. I guess my real question is if WVU leaves, pays a bunch of dough(that could be used for the C-USA/Mt West/WAC payoffs) would the BE want us and the others next year?
