I've heard its cause of basketball or TV markets or the history that the schools had, nobody has given me a clear defined answer. So stop being so gay when I asked for an anwser, not opinions. Where are all of the posters that actually know something about sports.

the added 2 more "spares" as you call them because that's the trend they started when they invited SMU and Houston. They want 12 football members and a championship game to remain relevant on the football field. Hoops has never been a problem for the Big East but in developing a 12 member football group, they've run into a problem with the league being top heavy in hoops. Memphis and Temple bring quality hoops programs, Temple helps bolster the Philly TV market and Memphis might help [deleted] Memphis/Nashville/Knoxville to the package, not to mention being the site of the Liberty Bowl. Big East can hopefully host that game in the future.

When was the last time Temple and Memphis were ranked in football? Houston could've gone to a BCS game this year if they didn't suck against Southern MIss and we aren't spared like those other two schools.

I don't understand why you all aren't understanding the importance of quality football teams for the improvement of the BE. Its great that the Big East is good at BB but the TV networks pay big money for big time football. If you have great football teams than other people outside the BE will watch the games but lets say when SMU is playing Temple very few people outside of Dallas and Philly are going to watch the games. When Stanford and USC are playing we all know that people outside of the Pac12 will watch those games, and why do they watch those games. Because they are high quality football programs. Football should be the bell cow of the Big East and not soccer, baseball, basketball, or track.

It's not that we don't "understand". It's more because you can't play a chmpionship game with 8-9 members and last time I checked Pittsburgh and Syracuse are leaving. I assume Tennessee and Penn State weren't interested in joining. I think we all understand the new Big East is basically going to look a lot like CUSA with slightly better media markets. What was your plan? To raid the Big 10? ACC? Hello???

SMU hasn't been ranked in 27 years either.

I can see he logic in Temple. With Memphis and Temple, the BE is being attentive to Louisville, which is at risk, if the Big 12 comes calling. Combined with Cincinnati, they also get two regional schools for FB and BB. Temple provides BB and a competitor for Rutgers, Conn. and Navy (FB).

BE will have in FB five regions, the East (CT, Rutgers, Temple and Navy), Florida (UCF and USF), Big Rivers (Cincinnati, Louisville and Memphis), Texas (Houston and SMU) and Far West FB only (BSU and SDSU).

This brings the FB membership to 13 which provides a cushion, if UoL bolts or allows for 14 FB schools. The 14th could be AFA or BYU, if one of them changes their minds. For BB, it should be at least 18, which its tradtional strength in the Big East.

So, we have New England, NJ/NYC, Philly/DC, Orlando/Tampa, Memphis/Louisville/Cinncinnati, Dallas, Houston and San Diego. Good large media markets.

BE has plenty of advisors who understand the end game a lot better than anyone posting here....

The media brain trust that the Big East had advising them included three former broadcast network presidents and former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Paul Tagliabue or BB #2? Soccer or baseball?

This is about the long game. The BE is thinking about the strategic planning to bridge to the next phase of conference realignment, Win the war not just battles.
