Re: Recruitment Apathy ?People get too wound up with how many stars are behind a players name. I can remember a "4 star" lb Bennett recruited out of SOC. Won't mention the player by name. How long did he last on the SMU campus? One year?
2015 INDIANAPOLIS OR BUST
Re: Recruitment Apathy ?I agree stars can be misleading at this point in the race. But the whole recruiting process is about playing the odds.
I like the odds a hundred times more on a kid (with unknown number of stars) who has offers from tu, tamu, ou, lsu, tt, baylor, etc., when compared to a kid with no offers from anyone, one offer from east central state, etc. Patterson has a track record now of being able to rather consistently dip into a lower classification hs and pull out a plum, or a position-switch player that excels where tcu puts him. When this hc has that kind of success to point to (exclude cons and grade/behavior problems), I will be much more inclined to give the benefit of the doubt. Right now, all I see are bullseyes on low hanging fruit. But I do hope I am proven wrong. We can't afford another swing and a miss going into an upgraded conference.
Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
There is always an exception especially with poor coaching but Bama had quite a few 4 and 5 stars that did very well. ![]() But actually offers sometimes tell a lot more especially from a highly visible high school. As stated about if we could mix in a few behavioral problems kids we could be the next Boise or TCU. "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Recruitment Apathy ?No one is that worked up about the stars. Most people are worked up because the only recruits we are getting seem to be garnering little to no interest from teams other than us. I do not care what rivals rivals rates a player. I care which of the 120+ fbs coaches have offered.

Re: Recruitment Apathy ?Is the '13 recruiting uninspired at this point? Absolutely. However, I still lean towards trusting this staff's ability to evaluate talent (except for QBs). Let's take a look at the impact players on this year's roster. Not exactly murderer's row of offers on this list.
Z Line (offer from Robert Morris) D Johnson (BC, Houston, Iowa St, UNT) D Thompson (LA-Monroe, NW State) M Hunt (none) Torlan PIttman (LA-Lafayette, LA-Monroe) JG Davis (Baylor, La Tech, Tulsa) Taylor Reed (none) Kenneth Acker (Hawaii, Idaho, Montana) Sure, no one will dispute that we'd all like to see some kids with impressive offer lists, but there's still a lot of time left and June typically identifies kids who can play in his system. Coincidentally, we've seen most of our more highly rated recruits (see Klemm) over the last several years flame out academically and transfer (moreland, livingston, printz, 4* JUCO safety(?), gamble, etc). A quick start over teams like Baylor, A&M and TCU would be the best recruiting tool at our disposal.
Recruitment Apathy ?I have my issues with JJ, but the guy can coach. As has been mentioned, most of the quality players we have had little interest shown in them. I don't care who we recruit because it only matters who sees the field and how good they are when they do.

Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
With no heavyweight recruiters on staff and a HC with a foot out the door there won't be any improvement in this class going forward. We haven't won anything in C-USA with June's tame approach to recruiting, worse results are to be expected with the same effort in a better conference. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Recruitment Apathy ?A) There is no reason to believe June has "one foot out the door."
B) You can expect worse results if you want. I expect better results. C) This staff has ID-ed plenty of players early who didn't have enough other offers or stars and ended up being good players. D) June and his staff seem to win games with their "no-name" recruits. If he keeps putting us in bowl games with players who weren't on the radar of the expert fans or the geniuses at the pay sites, I'm totally OK with that. I have been to three bowls in the last 29 months, and have had a great time at all three. I could get used to this way of spending my holidays. HOORAY, BEER!
Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
A) There's every reason to believe June has "one foot out the door" if you've been paying attention. B) You can expect better results if you want but we're not getting them with this type of effort in the Big East. C) This staff has identified far more unheralded players who have done nothing than have ended up good players. The few outliers they've hit on haven't actually won anything. D) June and his staff have won less than 50 percent of their games here and 0 conference titles with their "no-name" recruits. The majority of June's wins have come against weak competition. So they've gotten to some bowls, big deal because every team that isn't awful makes a bowl these days. This model simply isn't sustainable going forward against better competition (the legit competition June has faced thus far has smashed him more often than not). They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
A) Yeah, if you're anti-June, sure. But the fact that Maryland approached him last year and he flirted with Arizona State this year doesn't mean anything about next year. B) What effort? Do you know how much time each coach is spending watching film of recruits or visiting schools? Of course not. None of us knows, nor are they obligated to tell us, as long as they get players. C) Of course they have missed on some of the unheralded players. That's why they're unheralded. The fact is they can identify players, whether other schools or the recruiting sales services like them. Sure they're going to miss on some, and they'll miss on some more. But they'll get some players in the process, too. D) Throw out the first year when June inherited a team that had been losing a lot of games with players who didn't fit his system, and his record becomes 23-17. I know, the first year counts, too, but he was starting to teach his system and starting the process of finding players who fit his system. Besides, after watching 20 years of football in which we never even mentioned the word "bowl," making three straight bowl games IS a big deal. I look forward to the day when it's not, but at the moment, it is. Most PonyFans didn't like the idea that he might leave for another school, and I hope he never does. But I sure do like having a coach who's good enough that other schools might be interested in luring him away.
Re: Recruitment Apathy ?Gimme a break.
Fact: We have 6 commits who have 0 BCS offers And when they do have other offers its from UT-SA, UL-Monroe, Memphis or some other scrub team like that. Anyway you look at it, this indicates that the staff is not giving two sh1ts about recruiting. The coaches can only coach the players up so much. At some point you need talent to get over the hump and become a legitmate team. June has had 4 years and he hasnt been able to win C-USA. When you have Bert Hill with 5 commits out of the 6 you know there's a problem. Recruiting is the most important thing in college football and June seems to not care at all about it. He clearly doesn't see himself here for the long-term. He'll be gone after next season when Z Line, Davis, DJ3, Hunt, and Reed graduate This is the Big East class and recruiting is supposed to pick up yet it seems to be regressing. You sunshiners really need to start putting this into perspective and try comparing our class with other BE classes. Don't look at stars, look at OFFERS. There's a reason why a kid gets offers from BCS schools.. it's cause hes talented.
Re: Recruitment Apathy ?I'm not going to look it up but going back to the last month of the 2012 recruiting season our last 15 or so commitments are close to Rice/UTEP/Sun Belt Level. This staff is simply not competitive when a decent program offers a kid we want. The stupidity of the homers on this board who don't follow recruiting is based on the assumption that June Jones wanted the kids he settled for more. That is demonstratively false because they neglect to consider the 100 or so players we offered FIRST an wanted more but went elsewhere. ALL and I do mean all were BACKUP PLANS. If the QB from Washington commits I guess he might be an excveption but god knows why we have settled on him over many others.

Re: Recruitment Apathy ?I think the Webmaster need to look into some kind of BBS update, that just recycles posts from the same time each year, and posts them with random usernames. That way, there will at least be some variance from year to year.
It shouldn't be long before they have to re-post the "Hard to believe..." post again. ![]() -CoS
