Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
You know, for all these unheralded, under-offered, chip-on-their-shoulder atletes we have on our team, I would have expected more fire on the sideline while they were getting their underwear pulled over their heads at USM, Tulsa and at home against Navy for the fourth time in a row. I saw none except for Reed and Davis.
Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
Last 6 scheduled games of 2011 say a lot I think.
Loss to USM. OK, good team on the road.
[deleted] all over NE Oklahoma by Tulsa.
Huge W at home against the mighty green wave.
Navy - repeat, repeat, repeat
Cooger hs - Butt whuppin on the road.
Rice - 3 (three) point win at home against these birds of prey.
Lost 4 of 6, coaching staff appeared lost and disinterested vs Tulsa, blah blah blah.
Oh, then beat orphaned Pitt in Bham after jj caught with his hand in the cookie jar and his absolute necessity for a win to deflect critism.
The only thing close to fire was the Pitt game, and if one can build that up to be a really big deal with no Pitt HC or leadership then the White House could use you.

Recruitment Apathy ?
At the end of the day, a team with talent will beat a team that just plays a system.....see Hawaii vs Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

That is an interesting argument, and I'm not saying its wrong, but there are certainly exceptions. Texas Tech was very successful with a system, as is Navy and Georgia Tech. They don't win NCs but they win a lot of games. Hawaii beat plenty of more athletic teams simply by running its system. Georgia was freakishly good on defense that year and I think they'd have won the NC if they had been in it.

Or, you know, when the guy with the system leaves and he left no talent. Then you lose too.

Recruitment Apathy ?
What's ridiculous about all this is that even if you're happy about how we've played, you're happy with a top-third CuSA squad. Average in big east. Think what they could do with above average recruits?
Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
Um.....so is it true all of our commits have no other offers except for one who had an offer from Arkansas state?

Z Line (offer from Robert Morris)
D Johnson (BC, Houston, Iowa St, UNT)
D Thompson (LA-Monroe, NW State)
M Hunt (none)
Torlan PIttman (LA-Lafayette, LA-Monroe)
JG Davis (Baylor, La Tech, Tulsa)
Taylor Reed (none)
Kenneth Acker (Hawaii, Idaho, Montana)
Sure, no one will dispute that we'd all like to see some kids with impressive offer lists, but there's still a lot of time left and June typically identifies kids who can play in his system. Coincidentally, we've seen most of our more highly rated recruits (see Klemm) over the last several years flame out academically and transfer (moreland, livingston, printz, 4* JUCO safety(?), gamble, etc). A quick start over teams like Baylor, A&M and TCU would be the best recruiting tool at our disposal.
These are nice upper CUSA players. These are not upper Big East and certainly not BCS level.
We need to get BCS level fast. Soon the upper schools will litterally or effectively form a new division above DI-A/FBS and if we aren't there we are part of the new DII. We are running out if time.

Re: Recruitment Apathy ?
Thankfully Larry Brown is here and has already made just about all the right recruiting decisions possible by bringing in his staff. If June's lackadaisical approach to recruiting continues, it's going to be very glaring when contrasted with Brown's potential successes. If that doesn't make June take more seriously the role of recruiting within his staff, then it might mark the end of June at SMU down the line. We're going to the Big East, and in my eye it's going to be a much tougher Big East than the one it's been since the last round of realignment. Top recruits will be a necessity.

Right now our chances of getting into one of those superconferences are remote. They'll get worse the longer we're stuck with June. He hasn't shown any interest in doing what it takes to recruit at a high level nor produce a high quality on-field product.

I would like to see more agressive recruiting, but the Pirate is a bridge too far.

SMU Commit #7 - Nat Halverson, a speedy Safety, NR. The coaches continue to pick up these speedy kids who have few offers, that's not to say they aren't in the running on many 3-4* kids. They apparently trust themselves more than the Recruiting Services or number of offers. We shall see where we stand next Feb.

That's how Boise became Boise. Trust your own coaches recruiting instead of the so called experts......
