I think it starts with the music, good transitions on the video board, good transitions to breaks/commercials - enough with the family stuff, this is a football game..

SMU has always been more about the social scene. For many people it is more important to see and be seen on the BLVD than it is attending the game.
Maybe SMU could hire a University Park Fire Truck and 15 mins.before kick off the truck starts at Dallas Hall,turns on the high power water hoses and it slowly makes its way towards Ford Stadiun. Those that are not already on their way to the game get a little wet reminder it is almost kick off. lol

i think people really overstate the Boulevard attendance hanging back and not going to the game. I don't think it's that many people. There are a fair amount of moms and kids that just go to tailgate and go home, but not many people actually stay on the Blvd during the game.

As a fairly recent alum, I can report that more students go to the BLVD and not the game than students who actually show up in Ford. Here's how that conversation often occurs on campus on Thursdays/Fridays:

Person 1: "So, you going to the game?"
Person 2: "I'll probably go to the Boulevard but not the game."
Person 1: "Why not go to the game?"
Person 2: "I don't know, but none of my friends are really going to the game."

There is literally no game experience worse than ours. When they come out of the tunnel, it's almost anti-climatic...weaksauce videos and music, noone in the stands yet, etc.

Conversation by 2 sorority girls on the Blvd when we play Aggy:
Person 1: Why is the army here?
Person2: I don't know. Why do they have swords? I thought the army had guns.
Person 3: Oh yeah, we're playing Army.
Person 4: O really, lets just go to Barley House then.

Game day was a joke when I was in school nearly 10 years ago. At the very least, somebody from the athletic dept. should go over to TCU, USC, USF, UCF, Miami, Vandy etc. and see how they do gameday and appropriate, copy etc.... I guarantee all of those schools are doing it better than SMU.

Game day was a joke when I was in school nearly 10 years ago. At the very least, somebody from the athletic dept. should go over to TCU, USC, USF, UCF, Miami, Vandy etc. and see how they do gameday and appropriate, copy etc.... I guarantee all of those schools are doing it better than SMU.

I like that you picked schools in big markets but USC is nothing to compare us to. And with UCF/USF both being in the nation's Top 10 in student attendance I dont think those fit either. Miami is a push...much more storied program but it is a private university in a major market.

I'm sure its my personal bias, but I don't really think TCU does anything special. Better gameday attendance (obviously from their recent wins) and their billboard campaign was considerably more successful than ours.
I don't know much about Vandy- what's their gameday involve?

I've said it here before, I think the biggest problem we have is that we don't have any cheers worth a damn, and that's a good way to gets fans going. They started a RED- BLUE chant across the stadium last year that got some traction. I thought it was a good start. Need to do the first one right before kick.

It's not just cheers. It's things like the following sequence:

Big defensive play (sack that takes other team out of field goal range and sets up 3rd and long)
Other team takes timeout
Band plays Peruna and fans are into it...
and then the announcer says "Please welcome your Mini Mustang Cheerleaders!"
