Do you really think #2 is a possibility? Did you see or hear any evidence that Phillips was calling the plays in the last couple of games?

I saw a big change in several key elements in the last couple of games that looked a lot like some of the stuff Phillips did at Houston, such as the QB in plays, the TE use, etc.

There is also the persistent rumor from a lot of 'supposedly' connected people that the Phillips hire was more from Orsini than Jones

I seriously doubt that. We all saw the Hawaii Bowl, the win over Tulsa -- JJ was calling plays. But it sure will be interesting to see how duties are shared. If JJ and Mumme can blend the best elements of the Run/Shoot and the Air Raid, we might finally see the kind of explosive offense we've all been wanting to see.

Hal was the coach that sent us JJ when he left NMS. I didn't think we had room for an additional assistant coach. Our AD doesn't have the authority to change the color of our tickets. Much less tell any of our head coachs how to manage his staff.

Besides the use of a TE some at the end of the season, I was impressed we used a fourth DL also at the end of the season against the run. I think the staff is starting to get passed " we do what we do " and is beginning to realize we need to do what we need to do to WIN ! The hiring of Coach Hal Mumme as OC would be further indication the staff realizes this and is willing to make changes.

This recent USA Today article is probably the most in-depth analysis of the Hal Mumme legacy you are likely to find for those who don't know much about him

Are we still going to do that [deleted] thing where the QB runs to the sideline before every play?

DMN blog post:

SMU coach June Jones to interview Hal Mumme, O-Line coach Bob Palcic to retire
By Bill Nichols
[email protected]

Hal Mumme is scheduled to interview at SMU early next week as coach June Jones looks to fill a vacancy created by offensive line coach Bob Palcic’s retirement. An announcement on Palcic’s departure is forthcoming.

Jones said Mumme will not be offensive coordinator. His exact role will be determined after talks with Jones and his staff.

“We’ve been friends for 35 to 40 years,’’ Jones said by phone Saturday. “He believes the same things I do about offense. I tried to hire him three years ago but it didn’t work out. I want him to sit down and talk with all the offensive guys.’’

Asked about reports on Friday saying Mumme was being hired as offensive coordinator, Jones said, “It’s accurate we’re going to talk but the coordinator thing is not.’’

Jones said he will remain the primary offensive coordinator and will continue to call plays. Jason Phillips, brought in from Houston before last season as co-offensive coordinator and receiving coach, will have more input in alterations to the Run-and-Shoot as Jones seeks to enhance the passing attack.

Phillips and Mumme have experience with the Air Raid offense. Phillips was co-offensive coordinator with Kliff Kingsberry under Kevin Sumlin at Houston. Mumme teamed with Mike Leach on Air Raid schemes in the mid 1990s.

“I’ve really followed what Mike Leach and Hal have done over the years,’’ Jone said. “Last year we added about 20 percent of what Jason brought in. I liked it and want to add more. I think Hal will probably do the same. You have to keep studying ways to make improvements.’’

Mumme, a San Antonio native, played receiver at Thomas Jefferson in Dallas. He has had head coaching jobs at Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta State, Kentucky, Southeastern Louisiana, New Mexico State and McMurry.

Coach Palcic did a hell of a job patching together an offensive line that lost those 5 seniors and still protected GG and allowed Zach Line to have another big year.
Thanks for your work with the Ponies, Coach. Enjoy your retirement.

Now we need to hire the coach at DeSoto or Skyline (or both) at twice what they are making now to be our recruiting team.

Ummm, seems JJ is just repaying Mumme back for that #1 vote back in 2007. To many chiefs and not enought indians will surely create confusion among your offensive players.

I doubt it. UH had a three-headed offensive braintrust, and they lit up every difference they saw.

If Mumme really joins the staff, I think it's a huge addition, although who replaces Palcic is a major concern. But it looks like an indication that JJ realizes something needs to be done to his offensive system to allow it to reach the levels it did in Hawaii. We all know JJ has an ego (every good coach does), but the willingness to bring in some help is a huge positive, if you ask me.
