Spencer Hollie? / Zelt Minor?

Post by ojaipony »

Given the muscle we'll be facing next week, what's up with this guys? We need all the beef we can get but I haven't heard a peep about these guys. Anyone have any feedback?

Also, just shocked we aren't aggressively pursuing at least one solid NT in this 2014 class. This staff has completely checked out in the recruiting department (only Mumme with Harris) . . .

They are doing everything they can to try and redshirt them. Really good players though.

This would really be wasting redshirts if we played them. Our d line had at least 4 sacks again against what looks like a quality Texas Tech team. We never get sacks from the nose. They have to occupy blockers. I don't think Pitt had a single sack last season, but he was effective. Hollie is big and strong, but he is still an 18 year old. So is Minor. An 18 year lineman would get worked by a 23 year old offensive lineman. A five star guy might be able to survive in that scenario. A healthy program tries to redshirt all d linemen.

Jones will find a way to waste their redshirts. He has a good history of doing so so don't be surprised when it happens!

June will only burn the redshirt on those guys if he absolutely has to. Of course people will castigate him if that happens but I don't expect it to unless it becomes clear we are significantly better if we use them.

I have have seen June burn redshirts on certain kids that I kind of questioned. Hopefully we can redshirt them.

I'm all for redshirting, but if they are better than the current rotation, they should be out there.

What the hell is June doing preserving redshirts? We all know he's not here for the long-term

Exactly. Hard to believe that we leave Wright in the whole game . . . we should be rotating 2-3 deep across the Dline constantly . . . I don't even know who we have beyond Wright, Nabushosi, and Cameron Smith (all 3 of whom I like and all 3 of whom are undersized for interior linemen . . . Nabushosi and Smith should start at DE spots IMHO . . . Wood is a solid backup and Barnes is I don't know . . .) . . .

Nick Reed is the NT backup or was suppose to be.

I think the perception of this problem is worse than the reality. We had 4 sacks against what is now a top 25 Texas Tech team in our first game. Wright and McClennaghan have been ok in the middle. We are also developing a good rotation with Zach, Beau, Naboushi, and Cameron Smith. We probably do need to go 3 deep on the line. Hopefully Rambo comes back for A&M. I don't think Minor or Hollie will improve on the production that we are already getting.

Do we have anyone who can keep contain on Manziel? That is the bigger question?

In a video interview on PonyFans at the start of this season, I found it interesting that June specifically commented about how he regretted the need to "burn" Taylor and JaGared's redshirts. So while I think he'll still do it if the need arises, I think he's probably more sensitive to it now than what he once was.

As for recruiting an NT in this class, if both Hollie and Minor RS this year we should be ok. Hollie is 6-4 315 and prototypical size for a NT. I also remember Mason saying after signing day that they hoped to get Minor up around 300lbs, giving him the flexibility to play either the end position or at nose.
