That'll tell us everything we need to know about this university's desire (or lack thereof) to have a relevant football program. Embrace mediocrity

Yup, couldn't agree more. I honestly think turner could care less about how football does is the problem.ponyinNC wrote:Agree completely.sbsmith wrote:ponyinNC wrote:Where does the $ come from to buy his season out and pay entire new staff?? Unfortunately I think Jones will be back in 2014.

He'd rather spend his time on building fountains and fancy promenades

Haha that's the truth. I have to say, playing devils advocate, that it must be hard being the SMU president. You do have a big vocal side, that particularly lies with the dedman school side, that doesn't want us being a P5 school. They want us to focus strictly on academics and not have a budget even with our little one to exist. Unfortunately the 25 years of not committing to football has really given the opportunity for the anti football side to plant its roots at SMU. If we want change, we have to hope the BoD are replaced with people who want to see SMU football great again. Then in turn with get us a president who wants to think along those lines to eventually get the football department what it needs to get to P5 status.
Another thing is rather than marketing why not try to put funding into grassroots movements like Red and Blue army and such. I just don't see putting ads around Dallas like "SMU is.." is going to do anything. I say fund people who are committed to SMU who will go out on the streets knocking on doors and wanting to setup events to promote athletics. I think a grassroots movement is really the best way to get fans in the stands cause the status quo doesn't appear to be working. Just an opinion.

The anti-athletics crowd has been thoroughly routed at this school-you are about a decade late to that argument.

Or perhaps a University.
Re: Poll - When Will JJ Leave?
All these ideas to get fans in the stands (football) are pretty funny to me. Would you go to a wnba game if they had an aggressive marketing campaign and had people knocking on your door reminding you the Plano Princesses had a game against the Houston Harlots? Probably not because you aren't interested in their product. Similarly, most aren't interested in the smu football product at this time. I'm not sure any amount of marketing is going to fix that until we have a better team to sell.SMU_Alumni11 wrote: I say fund people who are committed to SMU who will go out on the streets knocking on doors and wanting to setup events to promote athletics. I agree. There is no interest in SMU and won't be until there is something to sell. And in football I don't believe there will ever be a product with mass appeal unless we join a conference playing with the big boys that the casual fan wants to see. It's sad but it is the way it is.

A better conference would help, but better recruits and an improved level of football would help much more.Mustangsabu wrote:I agree. No one is ever going to care about us playing Cincinnati. Ever*.
