I like the hoofbeats as well . . no need to beg for people to do things they obviously do not want to do!
And if they can just keep doing the hoofbeats until the snap of the ball . . . then the laziness that is the typical SMU fan can do what they always do . . . sit on it!

Sports, and all that implies.

MM1965, perhaps you could email the guy who sent you the email about the PA announcer thing and give them the idea

Here is how it works at ECU for those who weren't at the game (and those who were there, but are mis-quoting it):
PA announcer: "The ball will be spotted at the 40 yard line where it is a FIRST DOWN..."
Crowd: "PIRATES!!!!"
PA announcer (and some fans): AAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
The last part is new.
A lot of schools do some variation of this. Good luck against UAB.
GO PIRATES!!!

I think the first down thing will work, but I think everybody has gotten a handle on the third-down thunder. The jumbotron and the sound of hoofbeats would probably be sufficient. Although, I don't mind the verbal reminder. I really liked the bells at the ECU game. It was a cool way of letting the crowd know to get loud. However, let's stay away from things like the bird cry at NTSU. That was just funny.
