I think most people will not be getting their seats. Think about it, when my window opens up, I'll log on and check to see where my availability will be. If I find two seats that are in better position than the current ones I have, I'd go for those. We currently sit in 211, row 5, if I found 2 seats in row 1 same section, I'd go for those.
Most might end up in the same general area, but it won't be the same seats.
I don't like the idea of having to bid on something that I don't know what I'm getting. If I up my donation, there is still no guarantee that I will even get my same location, much less the same seats.
You're likely more right than wrong. No offense to anyone on this board, but rather than piece together message board chatter, I spoke with SMU multiple times yesterday to better understand this.
When you boil down all the "facts", and unless something changes, I see one very specific group being really unhappy when the dust settles: the group that has really good seats today + unwilling/unable to up their donation + relatively low priority points. It's likely all three of those have to align for you to "get screwed".
Take my situation for example. After this year I'm guessing my priority point rank will be around 1,100. As long as I donate enough, I'll be covered under the seat selection process. The problem -- and to 92's point -- I won't know what's enough. Do I need to donate at the $1,000 level or the $2,500 level. If you're lower on priority points you likely want to donate up a level.
I don't like this approach by SMU, but I get it. Quite frankly, if you have really great seats, have few priority points, and aren't willing to up your donations, I'm not sure you're going to find a large audience for complaints. The one segment I feel bad for is the long time SMU supporter that took a year off post 2011-2012 and perhaps can't spend a lot on a donation. Hopefully SMU is doing something quietly to accommodate that group.
