Gerald Turner 2011 Q&A: Bush library, sports, and personal

Post by skurtn »

I searched on PF, but couldn't find a link to this anywhere.

1st third of interview: Bush library + endowment
2nd third of interview: Sports and funding
Last third: personal stuff

Interesting Notes:
  • While the SMU endowment is around 1.1 billion, SMU is only free to choose how $50-$75 million is used; the rest is directed by the donors.
  • Out of 120 athletic programs in the U.S., only 14 of them made money, or broke even.
  • Too many interesting notes about the death penalty, SMU football, and the dissolution of the SWC to make a 1-liner.
  • Average SAT to get into SMU is now 1250-1260; and increases, on average, about 10 points per year (1900 if you count the new writing component).
  • 70% of students at SMU have some sort of financial aid.
  • 13,000 students will apply for 1,400 freshman undergrad spots.
  • Since 2008, SMU's athletic deficit has gone down by $3 million.
